Alloy Entertainment and Bonanza Productions have begun production on the fifth season of the hit CW supernatural drama series “The Vampire Diaries”, which has been given a full 22 episode order. The show’s casting directors in Los Angeles are auditioning actors and actresses for new recurring and guest starring roles. Smaller day-player roles and extras will be cast throughout the season by the local casting directors in Atlanta, GA where shooting takes place beginning on July 11, 2013. The series is based on the book series of the same name written by L. J. Smith.
‘The Vampire Diaries’ centers on the beautiful and compassionate Elena Gilbert of Mystic Falls, Virginia. After 145 years, the virtuous vampire Stefan Salvatore returns to his home town and falls for Elena, who has a tragic past and uncanny resemblance to his lost love Katherine. Always close on Stefan’s heels is his vampire brother Damon, a ruthless killer who also loved Katherine and is determined to make Stefan’s after-life a living hell in any way he can. When Elena succumbs to vampirism, she struggles to control her new powers, and longs to return to life as a human. The fifth season has some characters going off to college, a freshly cured vampire undertaking the task of human survival, and an astonishing Salvatore secret.
The series boasts an impressive cast that stars four-time Teen Choice Awards winner Nina Dobrev in dual roles as Elena Gilbert and as Katherine Pierce, the ruthless vampire the brothers knew and loved in the nineteenth century. Prior to Diaries, Dobrev was a series regular playing Mia Jones on the series “Degrassi: The Next Generation”. During the break in shooting, she has been starring in the Twentieth Century Fox feature film “Let’s Be Cops” in Atlanta. Also starring in “The Vampire Diaries” is Screen Actors Guild Awards winner Ian Somerhalder in the role of Damon Salvatore. Somerhalder previously was a regular on the hit ABC series “Lost”. Two-time Teen Choice Awards winner Paul Wesley plays Stefan Salvatore. Wesley began his television acting career playing Sean McKinnon on the soap “Guiding Light”, where he used his birth name of Paul Wasilewski.
Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson executive produce and are the series head writers, with Plec serving as showrunner. Alloy Entertainment CEO Leslie Morgenstein also executive produces. Caroline Dries and Pascal Verschooris are co-executive producers. In addition to Alloy Entertainment, Bonanza Productions is also one of the production companies behind “The Vampire Diaries”. Other series produced by Bonanza include Showtime Network’s “Shameless,” Fox Network’s “The Following,” NBC’s “Revolution,” and CBS’ “Person of Interest”. Kevin Williamson’s company Outerbanks Entertainment is the third production company.

Note: Various directors work different episodes during the season. In television shows composed of individual episodes, the television director’s role differs from that of a film director in that he or she may work only on some television episodes as opposed to the director of an entire film production. In episodic television productions, the major creative control resides with a producer of the show. The television producer with creative control is called the showrunner (in this case Julie Plec).
